What optional quests does Chapter 1 offer?
Sixteen of them, and every single one pays out something permanent — a stat perk, a crafting recipe, or both. The main story never requires any of them, which makes the whole set an optional power-up layer: finished quests shave real percentages off your oxygen, cold, and hunger bills for the rest of the chapter.

The four quests with dedicated walkthroughs — Attendant, Foreman, Snowman, and Leader’s Statue — get a link instead of a repeat here; the sections below cover the rest, grouped by where they sit on the map.
Around the starting train
Five jobs sit within a short flight of the crashed train, and four of them are plain material drops — bring the salvage from around the platform and finish them in one loop.

- Repair the Antenna — the cheapest quest in the chapter: 1 Metal and 1 Wire on the antenna next to the train. Do it the moment you can craft.
- Public Oxygen Station — 1 Metal, 2 Plastic, 3 Wires, 2 Duct Tape. The payout is a portable oxygen tank, which refunds the trip immediately: every long flight after this one starts with a fuller margin.
- Repair the Ticket Booth — at the Tickets station, for 1 Metal, 3 Plastic, 1 Duct Tape, and 1 Light Bulb.
- Loudspeaker — on the station roof, for 4 Plastic, 3 Light Bulbs, and 2 Wires. If you get stuck on the roof installation, that was a known bug — hotfix 0.8.8 fixed it.
- Romantic Spot — no materials at all: pry the love locks off the heart-marked railing platform with the crowbar. This is the Traditional Values achievement, worth Max Health +10.
Past the Hubble
The repair-work cluster thickens around the Hubble and Chuck’s Taxi. The two bigger chains here are the Weird Toilet (near Chuck’s Taxi — it demands a battery before its full repair, and pays Cold Protection +10) and Chuck’s Taxi itself, the largest optional quest in the chapter: restore the three missing letters to the station sign, then repair all ten energy terminals around it, then dig out its two hidden batteries. Finishing it pops the Alphabet achievement (Thirst Drain −5%) and unlocks the BEER blueprint at the station’s center — a collectible you cannot reach otherwise.
The smaller three: Playground (1 Metal, 2 Plastic, 3 Wires, 1 Duct Tape — the capybara toy sits on its slide), Sculpture by the blue toilets near the Hubble, rebuilt from three pieces for Max Satiety +10, and Thronehauler (3 Metal, 3 Plastic, 1 Wire, 2 Duct Tape).
Tool and cold-route quests
The last four need either a specific tool or a cold-survival detour:
- Oxygen Nests — ten nests on the route toward the 10G antenna, cracked open with the Thumper. Each one tops up portable oxygen, so this quest and the oxygen guide’s refill planning overlap neatly.
- Boosters — hand over 10 Nutriworms near the train for Max Satiety +5. The food guide covers where Nutriworms spawn.
- Foreman — out in the cold Industrial Debris Zone: a 14 Metal, 5 Electronics repair followed by his three-question work-safety test. The answers and the trap options are laid out in the Foreman test guide.
- Snowman and Leader’s Statue — the two restoration quests down the yellow train tunnel, at BB 30 and BD 30. Both areas are colder than 100 Cold Protection alone, so they share one trip plan: repair the gas-lamp heaters along the yellow pipes first, then collect parts. Full part tables live in the snowman guide and the Leader’s Statue guide.
Do the side quests pay off before the jammer finale?
Yes, and the finale is where you feel it: the jammer route runs long oxygen legs through cold space and a facility with no refill points. Going in with the Oxygen Station’s portable tank, +20 Gas Reserve from the statue, +10 Max Health from Romantic Spot, and the cheaper drains from Alphabet turns the chapter’s hardest stretch from a retreat-and-retry slog into a single planned run. The cold protection guide covers the insulation half of that preparation.
