What areas are in Chapter 1?
Early Access Chapter 1 is one continuous route through progressively colder and stranger space. In order:
- Station Outskirts — your crashed train car, the ticket booth, and the first antennas
- External Module — the first landmark outside the train; where the battery installs
- Colder wreckage — gated by 100 Cold Protection
- DEPOT — a frozen industrial region; the map area changes once you cross the cold gate
- Service Warmers — spread across the Depot; repairs raise area temperature and melt blocking ice
- Cryogel route — deep structures; robots moving through the cryogel indicate the direction
- Jammer facility — exterior power connection, then the interior machinery sequence
- Shuttle route & caves — marked parasite burrows; alkaline solution territory
- Final jammer area — the host, the sensor, and Chapter 1’s ending
Where do I start and how does the train work?
You begin at the Station Outskirts beside a damaged train car. Restore its power first — follow the wiring outside, retrieve the battery, and install it in the External Module. Once powered, the train thaws out and becomes your crafting, storage, and recovery hub for the whole chapter. It also carries the Wardrobe (suit patching) and a vending machine inside.
The full first-hour priority order — power, starting tools, scanner repair — is in the beginner guide.
What gates the colder wreckage?
Cold Protection 100. The wreckage past the starting zone is the first hard environmental wall, and the only number that matters is 100 — over-farming insulation beyond it is unnecessary. Patch your suit at the train’s Wardrobe with Cardboard, Foam, and Teddy Bears; the material trade-offs and module slots are broken down in the equipment guide.
Oxygen is the second soft gate: your base supply is limited on longer trips, oxygen terminals need Ice loaded before they’ll refill you, and stockpiling Ice early is the standard advice. The Public Oxygen Station in the Outskirts anchors early exploration routes.
What is in the Depot?
The DEPOT is the frozen industrial region you reach after the cold gate. Its environmental goal is raising ambient temperature to 100% by repairing the chain of Service Warmers scattered across the region — each repair raises the area’s temperature and melts ice blocking your path. The launch-week route continues from the warmed Depot into the cryogel structures; the robots drifting through the cryogel point the way.
Where do the later areas lead?
Past the cryogel, the jammer facility has two stages: an exterior power repair that precedes entrance access, and an interior sequence (gravity active, machinery puzzle, a Camerabot you talk past with a repair-crew explanation, and a recovered head that updates a profile to unlock the airlock). The shuttle route follows — parasites interrupt the trip, and you’ll spray alkaline solution at marked burrows to fill the shuttle’s tank. Chapter 1 ends at the final jammer: retrieve it from the parasite host, then hit the circular sensor with your crowbar only when the reading stabilizes green.
