FAQ

Where is the battery in Breathedge 2?
You retrieve the battery as part of the power chain: follow the wiring that runs outside the train, and it leads you to the battery and the External Module — the first landmark outside your starting wreck — where the battery installs.
What does restoring train power unlock?
Power thaws the train's frozen systems: the on-board oxygen machine (fed with Ice), the crafting menu's full use, storage, and recovery. After power, a failed scavenging run is a setback instead of a full survival-loop reset.
Why is the train so important?
It is the closest thing to a base in Chapter 1. The Wardrobe where you patch Cold Protection, the vending machine, and the on-board oxygen machine are all inside it — almost every progression system routes through the train.

How do I restore power to the train?

You start at the Station Outskirts next to a damaged train car, and everything in Chapter 1 routes through it. The power chain is short:

  1. Follow the wiring that runs outside the train — it traces the path the game wants you to walk first.
  2. Retrieve the battery at the end of the wiring trail.
  3. Install the battery in the External Module, the first landmark outside your starting wreck.
  4. Raise the pantograph so the train can draw power again.
  5. Return to the train — power comes on and the frozen systems start thawing.

That is the whole objective, but it front-loads every system you will rely on for the rest of the chapter. Full first-hour context in the beginner guide.

What does powering the train unlock?

Three things, and the third is why this objective comes first:

  • The on-board oxygen machine. Without power, nothing refills your air. With power, feeding it Ice refills your suit — it is your first and closest refill point.
  • Crafting and storage. The crafting menu opens up properly, and the train becomes the place your loot calls home.
  • Recovery. After power, a failed scavenging run is a setback — you respawn into a working base with your systems intact instead of replaying the survival loop from scratch.

The train interior also holds the Wardrobe (opposite the vending machine) where you patch your suit to 100 Cold Protection — the gate to the next region.

What comes after the train is powered?

The communication chain: repair the Interphone for the NPC Babe, which grows into the Three Antennas quest — the storyline that eventually pulls you across the cold gate into the Depot. While you work the antennas, use the powered train as your refill loop: short salvage runs out, Ice-fed top-ups back at the machine.
